Review- Da Kreek – Clock In: Flight Shift
Most people hate the fact that they must clock in to day job. However, Da Kreek puts a new twist on the term with their latest album “Clock In: Flight Shift.” Da Kreek consists of hip hop duo, DTown & Mello Dee, whom also executive produced the album.
The lyrics on “Clock In: Flight Shift” are very clever, cocky, and witty. They range from misogynistic, to rants about skill, to stories about their relationships with others. DTown and Mello do an incredible job of balancing each other out over the course of the album. Their styles compliment the production and songwriting that they’ve put together.
The production on “Clock In: Flight Shift” is lead by the duo as well, and they’ve done an amazing job. Each track shows an incredible display of finesse as well as a bit of ruggedness that distinguishes the group from other hip hop / rap groups currently in the market. The production ranges from pop, to 90′s hip hop, to electric R&B, to sharp club bangers.
The track “MAN DOWN” displays the groups clever lyricism over a hard hitting bass beat over rampaging synths and snars. While “DIZZY” displays the groups more soulful side as they talk about their life and goals over a smooth Japanese loop with Japanese percussion. The track also features cameo appearances from Cy Harp, Nia Nwan, and Diamond Nicole. All of whom came as a pleasant surprise on each track they appear on.
Ultimately, Da Kreek’s “Clock In: Flight Shift” is a solid listen that can be played from front to back. The album contains enough detail in the lyrics in production to the point you may discover something new each time you listen. The album definitely has a great balance of making tracks commercially appealing without the lyrics being dumbed down.
